Ethiopia

In Ethiopia sub-optimal infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices result in early death, illness, and high rates of stunting. Alive & Thrive (A&T) aims to improve IYCF by reaching 5.4 million children under 2 years old primarily through intensive community-based interventions in the four most populous regions: Amhara, Oromia, SNNPR (Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region), and Tigray.

Goal in A&T program areas

  • Increase exclusive breastfeeding among infants under six months old by 25% (from 49% to 61%)

  • Prevent stunting in more than 350,000 children under five years old

Our approach

  • Policy dialogue with national and regional health officials, parliamentarians, journalists, and women’s associations to raise awareness of the critical role of IYCF in increasing child survival and reducing stunting, and encourage investments in IYCF programs

  • Partnerships with national, regional, and district government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and mass media houses
  • Community-based activities through the government’s Health Extension Program and through non-governmental safety net and emergency nutrition programs, rehabilitation and treatment services, and community service and faith-based organizations
  • Market research to examine the viability of selling lipid-based supplements to help address nutritional gaps in traditional complementary food diets
