The challenge of meeting nutrient needs of infants and young children during the period of complementary feeding: an evolutionary perspective (Dewey, K., 2013. The Journal of Nutrition)

Topic(s): Complementary feeding
Location: Global
Language(s): English
Audience: Health and service providers, Program designers and implementers

This paper provides an evolutionary perspective on why modern complementary food diets are often inadequate, asserting that inadequate diets and nutritional deficiencies have likely been a part of the human condition since the agricultural revolution. Preagricultural humans likely had higher intakes of key nutrients, and the author concludes that in low-income countries, where resorting to a preagricultural, non-cereal based diet is not an option, other sustainable strategies for nutritional adequacy must be developed.
