Impacts of a social and behavior change communication program implemented at scale on infant and young feeding practices in Nigeria: Results of a cluster-randomized evaluation (Flax VL, Fagbemi M, et al. PLOS One. 2022)
The objective of this study was to measure the impact of Alive & Thrive’s IYCF social and behavior change communication intervention on early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding, and minimum dietary diversity in Kaduna and Lagos States.

Breastfeeding Interpersonal Communication, Mobile Phone Support, and Mass Media Messaging Increase Exclusive Breastfeeding at 6 and 24 Weeks Among Clients of Private Health Facilities in Lagos, Nigeria (Flax, V. Journal of Nutrition)
A breastfeeding promotion intervention in private facilities in Lagos, which included training for healthcare providers, increased the percentage of exclusively breastfed infants but had no impact on early initiation of breastfeeding.

This study evaluated the impact of Alive & Thrive Nigeria's IYCF behavior change communication activities (e.g., interpersonal communication in health facilities, community mobilization, and mass media) on early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding, and minimum dietary diversity.

Different combinations of behavior change interventions and frequencies of interpersonal contacts are associated with infant and young child feeding practices in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Viet Nam (Kim, S., 2019. Current Developments in Nutrition)
This article demonstrates that exposure to interventions matters for impact, but the combination of behavior change interventions and number of interpersonal counseling contacts required to support behavior change in infant and young child feeding are context-specific.
